One-to-one tuition has been proven to have a transformative impact on a student’s attainment, yet it remains to be a luxury only reserved for those who can afford it. In 2010, 64% of students who received free school meals failed to meet the benchmark of 5 A*-C grades at GCSE (including English and Maths). However, only less than 1% of students attending independent schools failed to meet this benchmark.
On-Demand is a mobile platform that connects tutors to students from disadvantaged backgrounds across the country. On-Demand is part of the charity arm for: a marketplace for private tuition with a mission to make tutoring fair. Curvestone has worked together with Tutorfair to help build the On-Demand application which gives students who currently lack access, the ability to call on the support of high-quality maths tutors, free of charge, from anywhere in the UK.

The app is really easy to use. After logging in, all the student needs to do is to take a photo of the math problem with their phone, there is a function to take a photo on the app itself. The photo is then uploaded to the messaging system (very similar to WhatsApp) after which the student is automatically connected to a tutor that can help.
